2017 – Introduction

Proceedings Published by:

Semantic Interoperability has been identified as a crucial topic for the Internet of Things
enabling the so-called world of everything connected. A connected world of “Things” not
only requires development of infrastructure and new protocols but also deployment of new
data services capable of supporting multiple, scalable (cloud-based) and interoperable
(crosssystems and cross-domain) applications. Semantics plays a relevant role in this
interoperability requirement and thus the intersection between semantic web and the IoT
is yet an unexplored area that requires research attention and industry development.

The Connected World & Semantic Interoperability 2017 (CWSI) workshop is addressed to
developers, scientific researchers, industry experts and general audience interested in the
evolution of the Internet of connected things world. CWSI aims to provide the possibility to
explore interoperability research challenges and provide a room to expose research/scientific
ideas and industry vision/progress. CWSI is also a venue to explore new trends and
opportunities of using semantic web technologies for solving problems and creating new
solutions on emerging specialized paradigms like the current Internet of connected Things
using semantics towards the Internet of Everything Connected (IoE).

In the race of designing the connected world as part of the Internet of Things architecture,
academia and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry communities
have realized that a common problem to be tackled is the interoperability of the data and
the availability for providing cross-domain information services. Worldwide there is an
increasingly focusing on how to evolve communications technologies to enable a Connected
World of “Things”, thus CWSI 2017 workshop focuses on defining and architecting semantic-enabled
connected world of things systems and the ways to interact and be interconnected for offering
the always-promoted everything-connected interoperability paradigm.
